Paoli is located in Chester County and crosses over the two townships of Tredyffrin and Willistown. It is about 20 miles from Philadelphia. The origin of Paoli was begun by an inn named after a general by the name of Pasquale Paoli in the 1700's and grew from there. It was located on the on the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, which ensured it's success.

On the evening of September 20, 1777, near Paoli, General Charles Grey and nearly 5,000 British soldiers launched a surprise attack on a small regiment of Patriot troops commanded by General Anthony Wayne in what becomes known as the Paoli Massacre. British soldiers snuck into the camp and murdered close to 200 Americans. The Paoli Massacre became a rallying cry for the Americans against British atrocities for the rest of the Revolutionary War.

Because Paoli is partially in two townships, there are two school districts; Tredyffrin/Easttown or Great Valleys School districts. Conestoga High School serves portions of Paoli within the Easttown and Tredyffrin townships.

Delaware Valley Friends School for those with  learning differences is also in Paoli. Tredyffrin Township Libraries operates the Paoli Library within the Paoli.

The construction of  the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad which became the Pennsylvania Railroad, and was built as a suburban commuter line in and out of Philadelphia in the late 19th century, triggered the growth of Paoli and other towns along the Train route known as the Main Line.

The areas along the route have become known as "the Main Line".The "Paoli Local" became iconic in the western suburbs. Amtrak stops at the Paoli station, but is not as as popular. The train now goes to Malvern is expected to be extended again in the near future. Septa's Paoli/Thorndale Line (formerly R5) commuter rail runs between Thorndale and Philadelphia every 30 minutes during the week. College students and city-working suburbanites take the Paoli/Thorndale Line to school and work. It's about a 30 minute ride to Philly.
